The very beloved star of Hollywood, Maggie Smith death at the age of 89 take over the news on 27th of September, Friday. Her passing news came on Friday morning. According to Mundodeportivo, her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, shared the heartbreaking news, saying, “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning.” 

Her passing is indeed a great loss for Hollywood and even more sorrowful for the Harry potter fans. The iconic actress was loved for her roles as Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter and the quick-witted Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey, has passed away at the age of 89. Not just fans but many co-stars are pretty devasted about Maggie Smith’s death and have paid their respects on social media as well.

Daniel Radcliffe, our very own Harry Potter was from the very first ones to post a tribute to his beloved co-star. 

“Truly heartbreaking, she was one of the most talented women to ever live,” he wrote on X. “She left an amazing legacy and she’ll always be remembered.” 

Dame Maggie Smith’s distinguished career stretched across more than seven decades, establishing her as a leading figure in British theatre, cinema, and television. She gained worldwide recognition for her role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and as the witty Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey.

Young Maggie Smith demonstrated her versatility early on, playing nine major roles at the National Theatre during its formative years in the 1960s. Decades later, she continued to captivate audiences, starring in Downton Abbey from the early 2000s, a Sunday night ITV series that became one of the most popular hits of the new millennium.

An interesting fact about her was that she always like to be called her full name which was Margaret Smith. Maggie came later on to not get confused with another performer on the Equity register which turned out to become the name people knew her from. According to her sons she was a really private and family oriented woman who liked preferred tranquility. 

She fought cancer and beat it in 2009 after which she said she had lost all confidence to come back on stage. But right after that she filmed Harry Potter-the half blood prince, and gave an unbelievable performance.

Hugh Bonneville, Smith’s Downton Alley co-star, offered his “condolences to her boys and wider family” in a statement shared with the BBC.

“Anyone who ever shared a scene with Maggie will attest to her sharp eye, sharp wit and formidable talent,” he continued. “She was a true legend of her generation and thankfully will live on in so many magnificent screen performances.”

Rob Lowe, who starred in Suddenly, Last Summer with Smith in 1993, shared his memories of the experience on X. 

“Saddened to hear Dame Maggie Smith has passed,” Lowe wrote. “I had the unforgettable experience of working with her; sharing a two-shot was like being paired with a lion. She could eat anyone alive, and often did. But funny, and great company. And suffered no fools. We will never see another. God speed, Ms. Smith!”
